Set Up Your Car for Your Vacation

Driving is just as American as apple pie. Everybody dreams of journeying across the country. Your future may include a long distance road trip, whether its all by yourself or with family or friends. Many people, when they’re ready for a getaway, just get in their car and take off, planning on making memories on the way. However, for most people, a bit of planning goes a long way to making the trip more enjoyable. Not getting prepared for the many things that can happen while on vacation can be a big mistake.

Be sure all your maintenance is completed and up to date to lessen the chances of car trouble. Check out the battery and tires, and make sure the oil was changed recently. Plan your travel out so you don’t have to worry about being lost or winding up somewhere you had no intention of visiting. Planning your over night stops and checking for road construction problems can help a lot, too. You need to have maps of any places that you plan to go off road and explore. You are going to have a better chance of making good choices, when you know where you are going. And also be alert – most accidents originate from inattentive drivers. So long as you remain focused behind the wheel and have done your planning, road trips can be wonderful experiences.

Talking on a cell phone at the wrong time is not good, but it might be a lifesaver, if anything ever happens, such as an accident. Check to make sure it is charged up and accessible, but no chatting while driving. Cell phones tend to be a major cause of accidents, but they are invaluable if you need one. And be sure you buckle up – most states require this, but seatbelts are a good idea regardless. You’ll also want to guard against theft. Make use of steering wheel locks, switches that disable the fuel system or ignition systems and have electronic tracking devices, and criminals will be deterred.

If however you have an accident then implement whatever necessary to protect your family, and keep your car from further damage. Push your vehicle so it’s not clogging up traffic, and be sure to turn it off so it won’t overheat and start a fire. Do what you are able to warn approaching traffic and then, and only then, phone your insurance company. If your insurance is not current, you should not even leave your driveway.

Make sure you have got all of your insurance information in the car, so you will know exactly what to do. You never be prepared to be involved in a car accident, but you still need to be prepared.
