So I found myself in a bit of a mix this month as I went above and beyond for a potential new website client and ended up over extending myself and taking a big hit financially. I spent the past three weeks fighting hard for a new marketing client in the travel industry with a sizable enough budget that would allow me to sit back and focus on one large project for awhile.

I spent so much time working on getting this new client that we ended up making some mistakes. I took payment from the client without establishing a proper contract or scope of work. The client gave me permission to do as I wanted to market the website and in the end the client had her own ideas on what should be done.

The lack of a web development contract or scope of work really ended up hurting our relationship and things just went bad pretty fast. Now in my own defense the client turned into a big part of the problem with the endless phone calls over tiny and unimportant details. At one point in the discussion about tagging content in a WordPress blog the client forwarded me an article about the usage of “tags” and how I was doing everything wrong according to the article. The article was about “qr codes” and how to use them in the real estate industry but since it apparently ranked well for a search term related to content tagging it must be the authority on the topic.

I think in the end the clients lack of knowledge and exposure to too much information ended u0p costing them the ability to remain focused and on track with a clear objective, all of which a scope of work and contract would have easily fixed. In my rush to get the new client moving forward I neglected to determine exactly what was in front of us. This was my single biggest mistake and the reason this deal is now a dead deal.

Friday Night at the Bowling Alley

I have been in a Friday night bowling league for five consecutive years. The 14-team league competes at a small bowling alley in southeastern Michigan from September-May. The first game starts at 8 p.m. and the final game usually ends around 11 p.m. on typical nights.

That start time has remained the same for all five years of my league membership. This particular league is strictly for men and there are a total of four on each team. Luckily nobody from my team has quit and we have stayed together for all five years. The name of our team is Joe’s Cafe, which is a small bar and grill nearby.

Joe’s Cafe is our sponsor and donates money to pay for our team shirts. My team finished in last place during our first two years of league competition. Our bowling skills were a bit rusty and none of us finished with an average above 140. Since then all of our bowling skills have improved tremendously. Last year we won the league’s first place trophy and currently sit in first place again this year.

All four of us live near each other, so we rotate driving duties on a weekly basis. Whether I am driving or being picked up, my home security system (adt home security North Carolina systems) is always set before leaving the house.

I have been using a laptop computer as my desktop replacement for over 5 years now and I cannot even fathom the idea of buying a new PC now that I have had the mobility and freedom of a laptop. I bought my first laptop with Gateway but had a number of issues with the company services as well as the hardware issues on my computer. It was basically a piece of junk with limited power and resources.

When it came time to replace the laptop I went online and found a great deal on a used Dell laptop which has been one of my favorite computers to date. The AMD processor and 3GB of Ram where just right and my laptop was a powerhouse performer with loads of features but lacking in one area. It was used with no warrantly or tech support available and I swore to myself my next computer would be brand spanking new from the manufacturer with a fully loaded warranty including replacement and full tech support.

As a computer user for over 10 years I don’t really need the tech support but having a new computer with warranty is awesome and it is simply a must this go around. The problem we now face is the price of new powerful laptops direct from Dell. The price is a bit more than we had hoped for but with a Dell coupon from Savings.com we are hopeful that we can save a few bucks on the cost of a new laptop and we are hopeful to have it here soon. Anyone else use a Dell coupon to purchase a new lap top?

We are going to be exhibiting at a local trade show and we are in the market for pop up displays we can use. I came to realize long ago that the secret to my business was that I needed to streamline all costs involved so my profit levels were 100% and I actually kept all of the money I ever took in without having to spend much of anything for the return other than some sweat equity and hard work. Living in a city like Fort Lauderdale had its advantages for some time but as I realized the high cost of living there was a damper on my ability to grow we started looking elsewhere to cut costs and after some math and budget adjustments I was able to figure out we could actually move to Jamaica and live like life were a vacation when compared to what it cost us to live I Florida.

What this will do for integrating tech industry into the mainstream of America remains to be seen but it is certain to make a change to small cities like Kansas and even Fort Lauderdale for that matter.

As a webmaster and online entrepreneur my entire business if focused on using the web as a marketing tool. For years now I have had a personal computer setup with all the great software that I need to do things like check emails, build websites and promote them.

I chose to use open source applications whenever possible because they are free and updated often. My biggest problem of late has been the issues my computers have been facing. My primary laptop needed repairs for a faulty ac connection and my backup laptop was being used by a friend for his music production.

I started using my moms home computer while I was visiting her. Her first complain was “all these things on my desktop” which were icons for programs I needed. I installed Firefox because I hate IE. I installed Filezilla for FTP access to my servers. I installed Photoshop because I needed to do some graphics work. I installed OpenOffice because she had no spreadsheet applications to use.

After having all of these installed and configured I realized it would be nice to be able to move these newly installed and updated applications to my laptop when it was available to me again. I’ve seen portable applications in the past but paid them little attention until now. Over the last week I installed all of these apps on a thumb drive and tweaked them to run smoothly from any computer.

It was actually pretty easy with the help of PortableApps.com which has a portable version of every open source program you can imagine ready to download and install on anything from a pen drive to an ipod. I have my thumbdrive configured to load Mozilla Thunderbird and cache copies of my most important emails so I can have them available offline if necessary. I setup Firefox with the Google Toolbar and I can now update my blogs using Google SideWiki or ScribeFire if necessary.

With this setup I can actually run most aspects of my business from any web enabled device that I can plug the USB drive into. So if something horrible happens and I’m without a computer for any reason I can just use my thumbdrive at an internet cafe, library or even a friends home to keep up with my business until I am able to repair or replace my own computer.

As an added layer of protection I have backed up the available data and applications on my server so that if I lose the usb drive I can replace it quickly and be back in business with little to no trouble. My only concern at this point is security. I would hate to lose the drive and have my business files and history available to anyone who finds it. I’m looking into encrypting the drive but that seems more difficult than I expected. Anyone else using portable apps to run their business?
